Will Du Gard is a Building Surveyor in the EK London team.
Will is always the first to arrive to zoom meetings and is currently missing the traditional Friday afternoon cheese-a-thons, which have sadly been on pause since the COVID-19 restrictions commenced! As we can’t get out and about as freely as before we thought we’d ask him some questions so you could get to know him a little better.
Q Will, what made you decide to become a Building Surveyor?
When I was in the Sixth Form, I was unsure what I wanted to do for a career. I had always been interested in older properties and so after discussing it with my parents, they helped me secure some work experience at Transport for London’s property division. Whilst I was there, I shadowed a group of graduate surveyors and saw the range of projects that they were involved in. It was a light-bulb moment where I thought that surveying could make for an interesting career. And so I looked into university courses and the rest, as they say, is history.
Q. What is the most unexpected discovery you’ve made on a site visit?
Finding an early 1970’s Triumph 2000 rusting away in a garage in Ealing!
Q. What has been your proudest surveying job or project to date?
I was particularly pleased with a flat roof refurbishment to a Chelsea mansion block that I oversaw, as it had a lot of logistical issues and the potential to caused a headache. Fortunately the project went smoothly; the client and residents were very pleased and it was completed by the Christmas deadline.
Q. What is your favourite building in the world?
Probably Windsor Castle (not the pub!). Firstly it being the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world is mightily impressive, and with over 900 years of history it has evolved into an incredible building that has been added to and built upon incorporating many iconic British architectural styles. Having grown up nearby, I have enjoyed visiting several times and it has been the backdrop to many happy memories.
Q. Describe EK in 5 words!
