Meet Phillipa!

Phillipa is a Senior Building Surveyor in the EK London team.

She has a masters in Building Surveying and an Architectural background so Phillipa certainly has an eye for design. And surveying is in the blood, as we found out during the interview…

Q Phillipa, what made you decide to become a Building Surveyor?

My Father was a Building Surveyor, and my Mother a QS…so I guess it runs in the family! Having said that I didn’t always want to be a surveyor…after Spice Girl and stunt-woman phases had come and gone, I finally settled on Architect. By the time I graduated in Architecture BA (Hons) I realised I was much more concerned with the preservation and restoration of existing buildings than the designing of new – especially here in England where our existing building stock is something to be proud of (mostly). So I enrolled to study Building Surveying MSc as a post-grad at London South Bank University and graduated with distinction. I’ve been living and working in London as a surveyor ever since.

Q. What is the most unexpected discovery you’ve made on a site visit?

A rare species of newt! It held up construction for months….

Q. What has been your proudest surveying job or project to date?

Whether it’s delivering a project on time and budget or successfully identifying a building defect, pleasing my clients doesn’t get old. But becoming an RICS Chartered Surveyor is always going to be a proud highlight!

Q. What is your favourite building in the world?

It’s impossible for me to pick just one. I appreciate the wackiness of Gaudi’s creations in Barcelona, the brutalism in London’s Alexandra Road Estate and everything in between!
