Overview

On 30 January 2023, the government published a developer remediation contract reflecting the pledge, and wrote to
housebuilders and developers to urge them to sign the contract in order to make the pledge commitments legally binding.

Shanly Homes have appointed Earl Kendrick to support them in honouring their commitments in line with the pledge, advising on the necessary work to address life-critical fire safety defects arising from design and the construction of their buildings 11 metres and over in height that they have developed over the last 30 years.

As part of this appointment, Earl Kendrick have offered technical support and advisory services offering technical due diligence for some of the Shanly Homes portfolio and by acting as Project Manager for cladding remediation schemes following receipt of relevant information such as External Façade Reports and Fire Risk Assessments.

Lead by Earl Kendrick, the design team has worked collaboratively to identify compliant and economical solutions that are bespoke to the structural requirements of the two blocks highlighted in this particular case study. This has involved invasive inspections of each block to reveal the material make up, design and discrepancy’s that differ from the ‘as built’ drawings including all other relevant historic information to formulate the specification.

The existing cladding system was determined to be combustible, and as such remedial works encompassing full replacement was required. We worked with the managing agents on each block and highlighted the benefits of including other building maintenance works to make best use of scaffolding, thus reducing future maintenance costs. Fire stopping and compartmentation works were also brought into the specification so that our client could rest assured that all life-critical fire-safety works had been incorporated and appropriately managed.
